Task 2
It is true that the construction of tall buildings is a relatively new phenomenon in many cities throughout the world. In my view, high-rise buildings offer a variety of benefits to residents.
There are two main reasons why it could be argued that living in a vertical city is the optimal choice. Firstly, the high-rise structure provides a sensible answer to urban housing problems. Many developed countries and regions, such as Singapore and Hong Kong, where the land is scarce and the land value is extremely high, have difficulty in accommodating the growing population. Because of great height, nowadays more residents can reside themselves in the city. Secondly, high density development also provides more space for other purposes. For example, the government can establish more public facilities, such as public transport and sports centres.
However, some opponents believe that the traditional type of city is more suitable for people to dwell in. This is because horizontal cities are normally those with older buildings. The traditional courtyard house is a good example. People who live in this environment can have a strong sense of belonging as the opening design of community space enables people to communicate with their neighbor more easily, while this is relatively difficult to achieve in concrete buildings. In addition, compared to high-rise apartment and offices, it is much safer to live or work in a low-rise building when meeting lire lighting problems.
In conclusion, I believe that an ideal living place consists of many factors, and the city scale is just one of them. Although there are mam convincing arguments for traditional buildings, the high-rise buildings might be the solution in dealing with the prospected problems.
