[Tám chuyện từ vựng] Rap News Plus: phỏng vấn hậu trường

Rap News (Bản tin rap) do báo điện tử Vietnamplus thực hiện xuất hiện lần đầu trên trang mạng xã hội Youtube vào ngày 12/11/2013. Đây là bước đi đột phá của trang báo này trong việc  tìm ra phương thức truyền thông mới lạ cho giới trẻ. 

Bài học được trích dẫn từ bài Vietnam Uses Rap Music to Report the News trên trang learningenglish.voanews.com. Đầu tiên, chúng ta tóm tắt nội dung học:

I. Rap News: Tám chuyện từ vựng 

1. Appealing (adj) lôi cuốn

Với nghĩa lôi cuốn, ta phân biệt appealing với attractive và interesting.

Attractive thường dùng để nói về con người. Ví dụ: Hôm nay em trông quyến rũ- You look very attractive today. Hoặc Đôi mắt em thật lôi cuốn: You eyes are attractive.

Còn appealing thường nói về vật mà ta không chạm vào được. Ví dụ Lời đề nghị hấp dẫn: This is an appealing offer". Interesting thường dùng khi mình khen xã giao, chứ không thể hiện sắc thái mạnh mẽ như attractive hay appealing. Ví dụ Thị hiếu âm nhạc của bạn thú vị thật: Your music taste is interesting.

2. Funny (adj) vui vẻ

Về mức độ vui vẻ, funny là làm bạn cười to (make you laugh). So với các từ cùng nghĩa, amusing/entertaining làm bạn mỉm cười/gây chú ý cho bạn (make you smile/get your attention). Còn hilarious là cười lăn lóc (rolling on the floor laughing).

Về tình huống sử dụng, ta so sánh funny với  "witty". Nếu "funny" chỉ vui vẻ do hài hước (comical) hay mới lạ (strange/peculiar) thì "witty" chỉ vui vẻ do dùng từ ngữ và ý kiến theo cách sáng tạo.

Ví dụ, tác giả câu nói “trong những giờ phút quyết định, tôi ít niềm tin vào phụ nữ hơn” trên chương trình Ai là triệu phú, khi được phỏng vấn, anh chàng này trả lời rất duyên và dí dỏm. (Bài báo phỏng vấn: click đây). Khi đó ta dùng "witty" để miêu tả anh này: He was witty

3. Tension (n) căng thẳng

Tension chỉ sự căng thẳng do sự tức giận hoặc sợ hãi giữa 2 nước hoặc 2 nhóm người không tin tưởng nhau. Còn stress chỉ sự căng thẳng liên tục do công việc hoặc đời sống cá nhân.

Ví dụ, khi Trung Quốc đưa giàn khoan vào vùng biển của Việt Nam, báo Newyorktimes.com đưa tin For Vietnam and China, No Easing of Tensions. Hay cuộc chiến tranh ở dải Gaza giữa Israeli và lực lượng Hamas, tờ huffingtonpost.com có bài U.S.-Israeli Tensions Rise Over Gaza Conflict.

4. Platform (n) nền tảng

Platform cùng với framework, software thường dùng trong lĩnh vực công nghệ. Để hiểu rõ hơn thuật ngữ 3 thuật ngữ này, bạn hãy hình dung 1 ngôi nhà. Platform chính là móng nhà. Từ móng nhà, bạn xây những bức tường, cột nhà... Những cái này gọi là framework. Sau đó, bạn trang trí, đóng cửa sổ, cửa chính rồi mua tivi, tủ lạnh... Những thứ này là software.

Trong bài, Soundcloud là một web chia sẻ nhạc online (giống mp3.zing.vn hay nhaccuatui.com). Nếu coi website site là móng với tên miền, host thì framework là giao diện cơ bản còn software là những những chức năng như tải lên (upload), tải xuống (download), tìm kiếm (search), chia sẻ mạng xã hội (social sharing)...

5. Cater (v) phục vụ

Đối với tiếng Anh-Mỹ, khi "cater" đi với giới từ "to", nghĩa của "cater" là mang lại điều gì đó cho 1 nhóm người đặc biệt hoặc. Còn "cater" đi với giới từ "for", ta hiểu "mang thức ăn/đồ uống" cho một sự kiện xã hội (social events) như buổi liên hoan (parties), buổi gặp mặt (meetings), hội nghị (conferences), tiệc cưới (weddings), tiệc lớn (banquets)...

Ví dụ trong bài sắp đọc, mình trích lại "to cater to the things their audiences want to read and they are interesting, even if there are no-go areas" (no-go areas là những nội dung nhạy cảm hoặc nội dung đụng chạm tới chính trị Việt Nam)

Tuy nhiên, nếu tra từ điển, bạn sẽ gặp ví dụ "This programme caters for the masses: Chương trình này phục vụ cho quảng đại quần chúng".  Dịch như vậy vì từ "cater for" được dùng theo cách dùng tiếng Anh-Anh.

Rap All About It!
The Vietnamese media industry is changing as it faces growing competition from the Internet.  One website has come up with a way to reach out to young people.  It uses rap music to report the news. That was the rap version of a report about the end of football’s World Cup in Brazil.  To date, there have been nearly 20 editions of Rap News Plus.  Most of the programs include stories covered in Vietnam’s traditional media.

Rap News Plus is published mainly on video sharing websites like YouTube.  Some videos have been watched over 500,000 times. Le Quoc Minh works for Viet Nam Plus.  He says he wanted to find a way to make news appealing to people between the ages of 13 and 25.  He says that age group has lost interest in traditional news.

“We need to bring them something new, something interesting, something funny.  But the way we select topics and the way we present it is serious enough.  So I bring the seriousness to the young people using their own language, using their own taste, their music.  And that’s my concept.”
One of the rap reports was published after China set up an oil rig in waters claimed by Vietnam.  The incident led to increased tensions between the countries.  Twenty-five-year-old Vo Viet Phuong is one of three rappers heard on the report.  He says he uploaded the chorus of the report to the online music sharing platform Soundcloud.  He says people started downloading it for use as a ringtone on their wireless devices.
Rapping the news is not a new idea.  But it is surprising in Vietnam because Viet Nam Plus operates under the official Vietnam News Agency, VNA.  The organization is known for its conservative way of thinking about news.

“Many others are very surprised when Viet Nam Plus has such a project because we belong to something really conservative, very mainstream.  We do not come from a company or something entertaining, but we produce something really entertaining, informative at the same time.”

David Brown is a former United States diplomat and an expert on Vietnam.  He says most Vietnamese newspapers depend on some kind of government support.  But he adds that many profit-making publications are more likely to push the limits of the law.

“In general, as you would expect of any publications which are essentially profit-making they are looking at ways to cater to the things their audiences want to read and they are interesting, even if there are no-go areas, such as shall we say a profound discussion of the relations between the Vietnamese and Chinese Communist parties or something like that.”

Right now, Rap News Plus does not make a profit.  Le Quoc Minh and his team pay for everything when making the videos.  However, the rappers do not get paid.  Mr. Minh says his main goal is to keep the reports truthful.  He adds that businesses can support Rap News Plus, but the reports will not talk about any product names.

“At least we have to respect our listeners.  We are talking about the news, not the brands.  Even if they bring us the money but we cannot accept this kind of money.”

The Rap News Plus design is a groundbreaking step for the Vietnamese media.  The news provider now faces the test of keeping the content new and fresh for a younger audience.
