Đằng sau những bài báo giật tít như "bạn gái tin đồn", "bạn trai tin đồn",... là công đóng góp cực kì lớn của các Paparazzi. Vậy họ là ai và sao họ lại theo đuổi nghề này?

I. Paparazzi: Tám chuyện từ vựng

1. Celebrity /sɪˈlebrɪti/ Người nổi tiếng

Từ có nghĩa tương đương như Star/Lumiary. Các bạn phải chú ý phân biệt để không nhầm lẫn giữa celebrity (người nổi tiếng) và celebration (lễ kỷ niệm)

Đây là một từ rất thường gặp, còn có dạng viết tắt là celeb.

2. Perceive /pəˈsiːv US pər-/ Nhận thấy, nhận thức, nhìn nhận

Phân biệt Perceive, Feel và Sense

• Perceive: thể hiện những gì bạn chú ý tới (express what you notice), thường thông qua bằng quan sát và nghe ngóng (by sight and hearing). Chẳng hạn, "I perceive that my friend is sad," nghĩa là người bạn của bạn thực sự buồn (your friend is indeed sad). Perceive thường dùng trong văn viết (in writing), còn văn nói hàng ngày (everyday conversation) dùng “notice”. Ví dụ khác: Trong lớp, có 1 đứa con trai ngày thường không nói chuyện gì với bạn. Tự nhiên hơn 1 tuần trở lại, bạn đó add facebook, nhắn tin làm quen rồi rủ bạn đi ăn vặt. Khi đó bạn có thể nói “I perceive a change in his behaviour toward me”
• Feel thế hiện ý kiến hoặc cảm xúc của bạn về thứ gì đó (express your opinion or emotion about something), thường thông qua bằng việc sờ hoặc chạm (touching).

Ví dụ: Bạn vào công viên thấy một cặp đang ngồi ghế đá. Bạn trai đưa tay ra đằng sau để ôm thấy bạn. Bạn nói “She felt his arms go round her.”

Ví dụ: If I feel depressed I will sing.If I feel sad I will laugh.If I feel ill I will double my labor. If I feel fear I will plunge ahead.If I feel inferior I will wear new garments.If i feel uncertain I will raise my voice.

• Sense để nói về những thứ bạn nghi ngờ. Ví dụ bạn thân bạn là đứa hay nói (talkative), bỗng hôm nay im lặng (being quiet) và mặt cứ buồn buồn. "I sense that something is making my friend sad."

3. Guilty pleasure /ˈgɪltiˈpleʒə US -ər/ Thú vui tội lỗi

Từ này dùng để chỉ những thứ làm bạn vui sướng, thích thú nhưng đồng thời cũng cảm thấy tội lỗi vì đó không hẳn là việc bạn nên làm. Ví dụ như khi bạn đang giảm cân và không được ăn đồ ngọt. Tuy nhiên bạn không kiềm chế được và đã ăn bánh. Cái bánh sẽ mang lại niềm vui (pleasure) cho bạn nhưng bạn cũng thấy tội lỗi (guilty) vì đã phá luật, và đó là một guilty pleasure.

4. Privacy /ˈprɪvəsi, ˈpraɪ- US ˈpraɪ-/ Sự riêng tư

Đây chính là dạng danh từ của từ Private quen thuộc. Sống cách biệt sẽ là “live in privacy”, demand privacy là yêu cầu sự riêng tư. Gần đây, Edward Snowden công bố các tài liệu của NSA (release National Security Agency’s material). Các tài liệu này có đề cập việc những công ty lớn như Google, Yahoo… cung cấp thông tin cá nhân của người dùng cho NSA. Điều này có nghĩa, NSA đã vi phạm tính riêng tư của người dùng (violate the privacy) và chúng ta, những người dùng Internet cần đòi lại sự riêng tư này (take back our privacy).

5. To seek publicity /siːk pʌˈblɪsɪti/  Tìm kiếm tiếng tăm

Seek nghĩa là tìm kiếm cho bằng được, hay theo đuổi, mưu cầu một cách đầy tham vọng.

VD: Ca sỹ Lady Gaga thường mặc những bộ quần áo quái gở (wear weird clothes/crazy costomes). Nhiều người nghĩ cô ấy tìm kiếm tiếng tăm mỗi nơi cô ấy đi đến (seek attention everywhere she goes) nhưng trả lời Andy Cohen của tạp chí Glamour, Lady Gaga trả lời “So in some ways, the outfits- these creations are because I don’t want to face the reality of what people want from a female pop star”.

Wherever there are famous people, there are “paparazzi.” That is the Italian name for photographers who chase famous people in an effort to take their picture. Their photographs and video recordings can be worth a lot of money.
Paparazzi sometimes wait outside the homes of actors, sports stars and other famous people. The photographers may follow them as they go eat, go for a walk and even fight among themselves. These pictures are often found later in newspapers and magazines.
Giles Harrison owns the London Entertainment Group, a business based in Los Angeles. He sells pictures of famous people to all kinds of media organizations.
“I used to see ‘celebs’ all the time, but it never really occurred to me that I could make money off of taking photos of them. And now I know I can. I do. So…” He says most people like seeing pictures of famous people. “What they don’t like is how they perceive that you get the photos. It’s a guilty pleasure of everybody in the world.”

One Saturday morning, Giles Harrison was looking a new photo of someone famous -- someone like singer Britney Spears.

“Is she there?”
“No. Is she even in town?”
“I think she’s in town.”
Mr. Harrison and his team are always looking for Hollywood stars.
“That is Robert Redford…getting in the car.”
He says taking pictures of famous people lets him follow his dream of being a reporter and adding a little excitement to his life.
“I’ve hung out of helicopters. I’ve hung out of airplanes. I’ve done a lot of crazy things to get a shot.”
He employs more than 30 other papparazzi around the world.
“You sure you’re sitting at the right house, because apparently she got burgled yesterday.”
“I’m sitting at the right house.”

Giles Harrison likes to look for celebrities when he drives around Los Angeles. He does not like to wait near the home of a famous person.

David Faustino has been an actor since he was a boy. He is best known for his work in the television series “Married With Children.”

David Faustino has been a target of photographers. He does not like them, but he knows he cannot escape them. He says at least they do not follow him like they do other celebrities.

“They’re a necessary evil. I don’t mind them. I’ve been dealing with them since I was a little kid on ‘Married With Children.’ And, you know, it gets a little crazy. I also don’t have them chasing me around like, say, I don’t know, Justin Bieber. It’s all good. We’re in Hollywood.”

Michael Burgeno is not a Hollywood actor. But he does like to read news about celebrities and watch videos online. He believes it is wrong for the paparazzi to photograph celebrities when they are with their children.

“If they, if they’re with their family -- yes, I think it should be, you know, that line right there, where they shouldn’t kind of try to interact with them yet.”

Giles Harrison says he understands this concern. But he says many famous people cannot demand privacy and, at the same time, seek publicity.

“When you have people like the Kardashians doing photo shoots with their children, and, you know, selling access to magazines. Once they open that door you just can’t switch it off.”

Hóa ra có ai đó trong danh sách bạn bè friend list đăng ảnh của bạn lên haivl. Bạn muốn mọi thứ bình yên, như cũ chứ không muốn nổi tiếng và nghĩ người bạn kia vi phạm quyền riêng tư của bạn.
